Istanbul, a city that straddles two continents, is buzzing with activities and countless attractions, making it the ultimate must-see destination of today. Once known as Constantinople, the icon of the Roman Empire, offers a unique blend of history, culture, and modernity captivating all the visitors.

Often used as a stopover destination, it has everything that a big city has to offer—from ancient mosques to museums, Turkish baths, whirling dervishes, bazaars, and markets. And on top of all, it boasts of world-class cuisine.

In my opinion, even three days can be enough if you’re rushed, but sometimes even a week seems short.

English is widely spoken here, making it easier for visitors to navigate the city.

E Visa to Turkey

Turkey is a destination that welcomes travellers with open arms, and obtaining a visa to enter the country has been made incredibly easy through their e-visa system. This option is not only affordable but also convenient, allowing you to secure your visa in just a few minutes online.

How to Obtain a Turkish E-Visa:

  1. Visit the Official E-Visa Website: to start your application process.

  2. Fill in the Required Information: Enter the necessary details.

  3. Payment: Pay the visa fee online.

  4. Receive Your E-Visa in the email, which you should print out and carry with you when traveling to Turkey.

Point to remember – Not everyone can apply for e visa. From certain countries e visa is issued to the persons who have valid US Visa, UK Visa, Schengen visa, else these nationals have to apply in the Turkish Embassy.

Airport and Taxis

The city has two airports – Istanbul International Airport and Sahiba Gokcen. Both of them cater to international flights but Sahiba Gokcen mostly caters to low cost airlines.

The taxis are easily available from outside the airport but they are quiet expensive. Uber app works well in Istanbul.

  • Verify the Fare: Always double-check the fare on the app before and after the ride. If there's a discrepancy, you can report it through the app immediately.

  • Cash Payment: If possible, choose the cash payment option in the app to avoid unauthorized charges on your card.

  • Track Your Route: Use the app to track your route and ensure the driver is taking the most direct path.

  • Report Issues: If you encounter any problems, report them to the app's customer service and the local authorities if necessary.

Hotel Shuttles: Many hotels offer shuttle services for a fee. It's convenient and can be arranged in advance.

Havaist Shuttle Buses from Airport:

  • Frequency: Every 20 minutes.

  • Destination: Direct to Taksim Square.

  • Cost: 30 lira.

  • Purchase: Tickets available at the airport.

Accommodation

Popular Areas to Stay:

  • Sultanahmet: The historic heart of Istanbul, home to major tourist attractions like the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, and Topkapi Palace.

  • Istiklal Street: A vibrant area known for its shopping, dining, and nightlife. Close to Taksim Square.

  • Beyoglu: A lively neighbourhood known for its artsy vibe, cafes, and cultural spots.

  • Near the Bosporus River: Offers stunning views and a more relaxed atmosphere. Great for enjoying the scenic beauty of the city.

Currency

The Turkish Lira is widely used and money changers are easily available. However, international card is also accepted at every place.

  • Small Denominations: Keep small denominations of lira handy for street food, tips, and small purchases.

  • ATM Access: ATMs are widely available, and many offer the option to withdraw cash in lira using international cards.

  •  Exchange Rates: Compare rates at different money changers for the best deal. Avoid changing large amounts at the airport as rates can be less favourable.

When to Go

The best time to visit the city is in shoulder months of April to June and September to November as the weather is mild and pleasant. These months offer lower accommodation rates, the attractions are not crowded.

Avoid peak summers, Istanbul can be very hot and dry and due to the influx of tourists during that time- the accommodation is not easily available and also highly priced, the queues are pretty long too and queuing in hot weather can be very draining.

Places to See In Istanbul

Istanbul is a very colourful town. Its dotted by big magnificent mosques at every nook and corner which are actually huge. Each one more beautiful than the other. The main two mosques are the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque.

  1. Hagia Sophia

Situated in Sultanahmet Square, it was built as a cathedral by the roman emperors but converted into a mosque by Ottoman Rulers. This is one of the oldest mosques in Turkey dating to 537 AD (when built as a cathedral)

Entry and Etiquette:

  • Lower Level: Reserved for Muslims and the inner sanctum.

  • Upper Level: Open to visitors of all religions.

  • Dress Code:

    • Women: Must dress modestly and cover their heads. Free headscarves are available on a returnable basis.

    • General Etiquette: Visitors should dress conservatively and remove their shoes before entering the mosque.

Since the mosque is so old the renovation work is going on (in 2024), there are many paintings related to Christianity like Christ, Mother Mary etc from its time as a church.

There is usually a long queue for tickets but it moves pretty fast.

Hagia Sofia has a museum too whose ticket can purchased along with the mosque or both can be purchased separately. If you plan to visit both the mosque and the museum, it might be convenient to purchase a combined ticket.

Guides - You will find many guides offering their services to buy tickets for you for a small fee like USD 2 for one ticket and saving you from standing in the queue. They also offer guiding services for a charge.

2. Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque)

This mosque is also situated in the same vicinity as Hagia Sofia, making it easier to visit both landmarks in one visit.

I find this more beautiful and majestic than Hagia Sofia, known for its stunning blue tiles that adorn the interior, giving the mosque its name. The mosque is most notable for its six minarets and large central dome, with a spacious courtyard.

The mosque is still in service and non muslims are not allowed during prayer time.

It is free to visit and dress code mentioned before needs to be followed for visiting any mosque.

3. Sultan Ahmet Square

Sultan Ahmet Square offers a wealth of attractions beyond the famous mosques. The Egyptian Needle, also known as the Obelisk of Theodosius, is one of the notable ancient monuments in the square. The gardens, tulips, and fountains make it a picturesque spot.

The variety of food and snacks available, like Turkish ice cream, corn on the cob, Simit bread with Nutella filling, and grilled chestnuts, adds to the charm of the area. It's a great place to explore, enjoy local delicacies, and soak in the historical and cultural ambiance of Istanbul.

There are many souvenir shops and ATM Machines too are installed in the square. You may withdraw Turkish Lira or any other foreign currency by paying a commission.

In case you need to use the washroom then the mosque is the best place to go. It has public toilets which are clean and free of cost. The mosques also have private washing area for feet, arm and face before getting ready for prayer.

If you try to access the public washrooms at Sultan Ahmet square and every other public place you need the Istanbul Kart.

4. Topkapi Palace

This is also situated in the Sultan Ahmet Square. Its one of the most magnificent palace built during the Ottoman rule and used by them for over 400 year. One cannot imagine the vastness and largeness of the palace unless you have visited it.

The palace now serves as a museum and displays weapons used by the sultans, their ornaments, watches, dresses, beds, furniture, Qurans used by the royalty.

The palace is situated near the Bosporus river and offers stunning views of the river.

It’s a huge palace complex and after sometime viewing all the artefacts become a bit overwhelming.

The tickets are highly priced at 25 euros per person but it's a must visit.

There is also a Turkish Hamam which one can visit after all the days activity.

One important tip – At the prayer time only Muslims are allowed inside the mosques.

5. Bosphorus Cruise

The Bosphorus Cruise is indeed a highly recommended activity in Istanbul. Many travel companies, including Viator, Expedia, GetYourGuide, and TripAdvisor, offer various options - day, sunset, and dinner cruises featuring belly dancing and other Turkish dances.

Prices vary according to the time, route, and duration of the cruise. Hiring a small yacht is also an option for a more private experience. The sunset cruise is particularly enjoyable, offering beautiful views and sights along the way.

6. Green Bazar

At a walking distance from Sultanahmet Square. It is a big famous bazaar full of Turkish Artefacts, scarves, dresses, Turkish pottery etc. It is a closed market with shops on both sides.

There is so much to see at Sultan Ahmet Square – a Turkish Hamam is also there which one can visit after all the days activity.

7. Istikal Street

Istiklal Street is one of Istanbul's most famous and bustling avenues, and it stretches from Taksim Square to Galata Tower.

The main highlights of the Street:

  • Enjoy the Tram: Take a ride on the historic red tram for a nostalgic experience.

8. Galata Tower

It is one of Istanbul's most iconic landmarks, offering stunning panoramic views of the city. It is actually a watch tower with an observation deck where you can see the iconic landmarks of Istanbul. There is an exhibition inside the Tower and it also has a café and restaurants.

Tips for Visiting

  • Best Time to Visit: Early morning or late afternoon is ideal to avoid the crowds and to catch the best light for photography. Sunset is particularly spectacular from the tower.

The Istanbul Promenade, commonly referred to as the "Istanbul Waterfront" is a scenic and vibrant area along the Bosphorus Strait that offers a delightful mix of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and modern amenities. Its dotted with numerous waterfront restaurants and make for a delightful experience.

Turkey: A Foodies Paradise

There is so much to eat in turkey. Almost every street and every historical area is lined with restaurants and eating places.

Some must tries:

  • Donar Kebabs - Doner kebabs are a popular type of Turkish street food that has gained worldwide popularity. They consist of seasoned meat typically lamb, beef, chicken, or a combination, marinated with various spices and herbs.  cooked on a vertical rotisserie. It is usually eaten with Pita or Flatbread
